Pet lovers know their pets rely on them every day so don't forget them in a survival situation. Hundreds of pets were abandoned during the Katrina disaster and were rescued. We strongly suggest owners of cats and small dogs especially consider the pet carrier. If you end up in a shelter or evacuate your home it can really make the difference. Many pets will be very frightened and may escape at the first opportunity. Smoke, winds, noise, and your own anxiety will further their distress.
We have our horse trailer at the ready and pet carriers (large and small) in the tack room of the trailer.
We've heard that some horse owners will paint their phone number on their horses and set them free, hoping they can take care of themselves and escape the fire. Here, in Jefferson County, Colorado, there is a volunteer organization called "Jeffco Heat" that evacuates horses and other large animals if wildfires threaten an area.
We believe in trailering them out of the area to our county fairgrounds and keeping our small pets with us.
